Example 1: What is matched on?

PageRank Technology
: When I typed in google page rank in the search engine, the first web page that appeared was a "google page rank checker." When google technology was put into the search engine, the first web page that came up was Corporate information-technology overview. Pagerank technology states that the web pages that they believe to be more important are given a higher rank than the other web pages. That is why the first web page that appeared on the search engine when google technology was typed in was:
http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html.

Example 2: Word order and word choice matter

When I typed in 'grass snake' into the search engine, images of an actual grass snake showed up. The first web page that appeared was www.wikipedia.com, and the article contained all of the information on grass snakes. When 'snake grass' was searched in google, the first web page was www.urbandictionary.com, with the topic as 'snake in the grass', while the other sites and images seemed to be similar to what came up for 'snake grass'. Then, when 'snake in the grass' was typed in, the first result was the same as 'snake grass', with the remainder of the results being in different order. When snake +in +the grass was searched, some of the web pages order was changed, and one or two of the images were gone. "Snake in the grass" had similar web pages in some what different order, but the images were different.

Googling to the max; Part 2

Google is a search engine on the internet that any person in the world can go on to get access to information on a certain topic. Google started out as a project in the U.S Military that went by the name ARPANET in the year 1969. WWW is different websites that you are able to get to because of the internet. The internet is a system of computers where information is sent. When something is entered into a search engine, a spider (or according to www.webopedia.com, it is a program) that on command, brings forth websites that has to do with the related subject. Google is not the only search engine out there on the internet. There are other popular search engines that are known as: Yahoo!, MSN, Road runner, and ASK.com. Google has the highest index so far, with the amount of 8.1 billion pages. Following google is MSN, with 5 billion pages. Some web pages out there on the internet are out there in the open and are able to be searched easily by search engines. Even though some are able to be searched, others are not. Depending on the search engine, some of the information that you are seeking will not be available.
While looking up information on the internet, you are able to work your way around by using truncation, phrase searching, search limits, boolean operators, etc. Truncation is when you are able to search for a part of a word. Also, the last part of the truncation can vary. Boolean operators is the combination of multiple words that are being searched. Search limits is the outcome of a search being decreased because of a restriction.
Phrase searching makes it possible for a person to locate an amount of two or more words that are together. When phrase searching is used, more searches are able to come up if you add the two words or more separately. Special search characters is when different symbols can be used when looking for information using a search engine. The symbols vary depending on the search engine being used.
When you are searching for information on the internet, check your sources. Not every web page on search engines are trustworthy and have the accurate information on the subject. You could use 'Pearl cutting', which means to use one specific source to find other sources. Search engines are good to use when you need information a topic, because books can go out of date, while search engines find web pages that are updated.

Culture of Ireland digital story video



This digital story is about the culture of Ireland. Ireland's culture is what makes it different from other countries around the world. This video showed Ireland's traditions, from celebrating St. Patrick's day to Irish step dancing. Also, I included in this video the potato famine that occurred in the year 1845 and then lasted for six years on. This was a major event in Ireland, as the potatoes were the main crop. People were left without food. A countries culture is extremely important, as it is what a country represents. As the years pass, traditions are still celebrated around the world.

Narrative - Culture of Ireland.

In the United Kingdom, there is a place called Ireland. I am an Irish-American woman, who was born in Manhattan, New York in the year 1919. Both of my parents were born in County Sligo, Ireland. After less than a year of being alive, I moved to Ireland with my parents and siblings. Growing up, I lived on a farm in County Sligo. While living in Ireland, British people were invading Ireland. My family and I tried to escape Ireland by getting on a train, but this was not a success as the British soldiers took over the train and kicked us out. They then led us to the woods and left us there. We started to wander around the woods and attempt to find our way out, when Irish men saved us and led us in the right direction. I was a baby, so one of the men carried me while my mother and father held my other siblings.
On the date of March 17th, we celebrate a holiday called St. Patrick's Day. On this day, we eat potatoes, corn beef, and cabbage. Growing up, my family told me that St. Patrick was a man who got all of the snakes out of Ireland, and so we celebrate a day dedicated to him. Every year, no matter what, I wear the color green to symbolize my Irish heritage.
In Ireland, people speak English. However, along with speaking English, some people speak a language called "Gaelic" as well. I can say few words in this language. I am a Roman Catholic, so I can say a prayer in Gaelic.
A food people in Ireland frequently eat is potatoes. Potatoes are the main crop in Ireland. The potato famine started in the year 1845 and lasted for some years. What occurred was the potato crops were no good anymore due to some sort of fungus. This killed many Irish citizens, as they died of starvation because they relied so much on the potato crop for food. I was not alive during this time and living in Ireland, but my Grandmother was.

Narrative - My Dreams.

Narrative - My aspirations.

Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be a writer. Most children want to be a firefighter, a police officer, or a business woman. That was not the case with me. I loved hearing stories read to me by my mother and teachers, and I loved the idea of being able to create a whole story all by yourself, about whatever you wanted to. From my experience, it has been a way to let your feelings out without being judged, because nobody knows that it is your personal feelings, but the characters. I would sit at home, write my own stories for hours and then have my mother read it. In the fifth grade, we would often write our own stories and then read them to the class. In fact, in middle school I would get into trouble by the teachers for reading in class. When I had a book in my hands, nothing mattered. I just loved to read and write. At one point in the eighth grade, I wrote a twelve page story on my laptop. The great thing about writing is that you can use your own personal experiences, and then write it the way that you wish the event had happened. This was my favorite lesson in elementary school. I hope to go to a college like NYU, and study creative writing and film. I idolize the work of Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino. In my future, I would like to direct movies and write screenplays. When I was about eight or nine years old, I watched a movie that was filmed in Australia. I thought it was so beautiful and pleasant there, and since then I have wanted to move to Sydney, Australia. I would also like to get married by the time I am twenty-seven. I think it would be nice to have children when I am at least thirty years old. So, that is my dream at the moment. To go to NYU, move to Australia and be a director or screenwriter, get married and have kids.

Digitales Evaluation

The video featured on the Digitales website that I think is the most globally aware is the "Number the stars" video by an elementary school teacher by the name of Brandi. This video is globally aware because it discusses the Holocaust. The images that are shown in this video are pictures of people during the Holocaust that were suffering. The woman, Brandi, had very valid information. In the voiceover, she discussed how badly the people were treated.

Digital Story 2 Topic

In the first semester of Global Technology, we completed a project called a "Digital Storytelling" slide. It showed that as CSIHSIS students, we are culturally aware, academically prepared, etc. We were given the choice to do the slide either on ourselves, or events that are happening all over the world. Now, we are doing our second Digital Storytelling project. I have chosen the topic of rock music that was popular during the time period of the 1970's. The bands that I am involving in this project are Led Zeppelin, The Clash, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Runaways, and many more. I plan on having songs from these bands playing in the pictures for the slide, and pictures of the bands while they were playing at concerts.

During the 1970's, rock bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Clash, Black Sabbath, The Runaways, Pink Floyd, The Knack, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and many more came to fame.
4)Why do you feel this story is important to tell?
I feel this story is important to tell because many people have been inspired by these bands and started playing music. For some people, music is an escape. These influential bands have been favorites of many people in the world even until this day. It is important that people do not forget about music that is not from our time period.

5) What are some challenges of telling this story? (hard to find information, personal, etc)
A challenge of telling this story would be that I was born in the year 1994. During the 1970's, I was not even born when all of these great songs were coming out. I will have to ask people who were living during those years so I can have information on this topic.

Digital Story 2

As a student in CSIHSIS, you are academically prepared. You have an option of three languages to learn, such as Mandarin (Chinese), Spanish, and Japanese. We are taught how to read and write in either Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, which are popular international languages in the 21st century. This makes us culturally aware as well. We are given the chance to travel to different places like Switzerland, Germany, China, Japan, etc. Students of CSI are also aware of events that have occurred in the past. We took a trip to the Jewish Museum located in New York City to learn about the Holocaust. There is also a club called Model UN, in which students debate about different topics that are going on in the generation today. In addition to Art and Guitars as a subject for the students of CSIHSIS, we are offered a subject called Global Technology where we use Mac laptop computers and learn about the internet and other areas of technology software. I have my own blog site now, which has all of my work in Global Technology on it. Our school also interacts with other schools in different countries, and some of their students come to our school for about two weeks, and then students from our school then go to their school in a different country. I have definitely learned more information about different cultures, and technology than I already did know before I entered the College of Staten Island for International Studies.
